The name "New Brunswick" originated from the French and English partial transcription of the city of Brunswick or Braunschweig in German. This city of Brunswick is the ancestral home of the Hanoverian King George III from Great Britain.

New Brunswick's urban areas have a big service based economy concentrated on educational, financial, health care, insurance and retail sectors. The city of Fredericton on the other hand is mostly occupied with the government, military services and universities. The province's rural economy is based mostly on mixed fishing, farming, mining and forestry industries. There are several sawmills within the tinier towns. Big paper and pulp mills are situated in the cities of Saint John, Edmundston, Nackawic and Miramichi.

The mining within the province of New Brunswick is heavily based in the heavy metals zinc and lead. These minerals are mined in the north of the province of New Brunswick neighboring Bathurst. Sussex is home to amongst the world's biggest potash deposits. There is a development of a 2nd potash mind within the Sussex region that is estimated to be costing more than one billion dollars. Natural gas and oil deposits are also being explored and developed in the Sussex region as well.

The farming sector in New Brunswick is located largely within the upper Saint John River Valley. This part includes the northwest portion of the province. The most valuable crop grown here is potatoes. There are also dairy and mixed farms which are located elsewhere, mainly within the southeast region of the province of New Brunswick, concentrated within the Petitcodiac and Kennebecasis river valleys. With regards to the fishing trade, the most valuable catches include king crab, lobster and scallops. An essential part of the local fishing industry is the farming of Atlantic salmon in the Passamaquoddy Bay area.

There is a huge tourism business within Saint John from cruise ships. Some of best tourist spots in the province include the New Brunswick Museum, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Hopewell Rocks, Minister;s Island, Kings Landing Historical Settlement, the Magnetic Hill Zoo, magic Mountain Water Park, Sackville Waterfowl Park, Les Jardins de la République, La Dune de Bouctouche, Crystal Palace, Village Historique Acadien, Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Preserve and Casino New Brunswick as well as the 41 km or 25 mile Fundy Hiking Trail.
